History

The foundation of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod was laid down in 1916 as People’s University of Russia. This university became was the first university founded in the Soviet state and had laid the foundation for the development of the system of higher education institutions in the city.

In 1930, due to the transformation of some faculties of State University of Nizhny Novgorod six institutes were formed. These include Chemical Institute, Mechanical Engineering, Pedagogical Institute, Medical Institute, Agricultural Institute and construction Institute. In 1945, the faculty of Radio Physics was established – the first one in USSR. In 1963, the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics was founded. The university was widely recognized for conducting parallel research to meet the need of society.

In 1988, UNN Physics of Solid-State Nanostructures Research and Education Centre was set up following scientific development in the field. In 2004, UNN has become the first Russian university to launch Wi-Fi technology for wireless access to the internet within the campus. One year later, the Faculty of international students was also established.
